Rückblick

Zum Jahresende ein kleiner Rückblick auf Shootings im Jahr 2011. Ich danke allen, die vor meiner Kamera waren für euer Vertrauen, den Spaß und die Ideen, die wir zusammen hatten und umsetzen konnten. Ich konnte lernen, habe den Schritt aus dem Studio gemacht, konnte dabei den Kopf frei kriegen und hoffe, es sind ein paar Bilder entstanden, die auch für euch ein klein wenig die Zeit anhalten.

Ich erinnere mich gern an alle Shootings - einige liegen mir besonders am Herzen, weil der Spaß, die Gespräche und Ideen dazu einfach so wunderbar passten. Ich durfte durch die Fotografie einige ganz besondere Menschen kennen lernen. Diese Erinnerungen neben den Fotos sind meine Motivation, immer wieder Menschen zu portraitieren.

Aber - was wäre ich ohne die Menschen vor der Kamera?
Ein Fotograf, mit leerem Studio, leerer Speicherkarte und einer teuren, ungenutzten Kamera. Darum, auch weil es irgendwie aus der Mode kam: ein ganz dickes Dankeschön, an alle, die dieses Jahr vor der Kamera waren. Über 4000 Fotos fanden den Weg in BestOf-Ordner. Ohne euch wäre dieser Ordner leer und das Logo von CPPHOTO nur eine Grafik. Nur durch euch wird sie lebendig.

Leider war das Jahr auch durch viele Absagen geprägt, etwa knapp die Hälfte der teils langfristig und aufwändig geplanten Shootings fanden nicht statt. Wegen Frechheiten wie ohne Absage nicht zu erscheinen über kurzfristige Absagen wegen spontan anderer Prioritäten bis zum nachträglichen Einschränken der Aufnahmebereiche ging viel zu viel Zeit bei der Organisation und Nachbereitung, ohne das geplante Ergebnis zu haben, drauf. So wird es für TFP Shootings nicht weiter gehen.

Immerhin gelang es mir oft, Absagen durch spontane und gelungene Shootings zu ersetzen, es ist immer gut einen Plan B oder eine Warteliste zu haben. Ich musste selbst auch mal absagen und gegen rechtzeitige, beruflich, familiär oder gesundheitlich bedingte Absagen wird niemand etwas sagen. Da habe ich volles Verständnis und dieses ja selbst auch oft erfahren. Mich ärgert die nicht entgegengebrachte Wertschätzung meiner Zeit und der meiner Familie, die meinen Fototick derzeit noch mitmacht.

Ob und wie ich 2012 wieder TFP Fotoshootings anbiete, weiß ich noch nicht. Mein Kalender hier zeigt freie Termine, aber ob ich die Energie aufbringe, da weiter das Risiko der Absagen mir unbekannter Modelle zu akzeptieren? Ich werde bevorzugt mit Menschen Fotos machen, die mein Thema mitmachen, die ich kenne und denen ich vertraue, dass es keine Spaßbuchungen sind. Ich bin daher sehr froh, schon einige Termine und Themen abgemacht zu haben und freue mich schon auf den Sommer, outdoor, R4, Strand, das Leben. Meine Ideen stehen im Blogbeitrag zuvor. Auch Workshops mit anderen Fotografen und mit einem bezahlten Model sind angedacht. Oder Fotos mit mehr Risiko, Unschärfe, Bewegung, Tanz, Leben. Weniger Studio auf jeden Fall. Wir sehen uns...

Ein wunderbares Shooting

Was für ein wundervoller Shootingtag. In vier Stunden entstanden viele unterschiedliche Bilder, wir haben alle Möglichkeiten des Studios genutzt - nur den klassischen Studiohintergrund nicht. Viele Bilder nur mit Tageslicht und Sunbounce-Reflektor, dann im weißen Studio das herrliche Mischlicht aus Blitz und Himmel draußen. Der Studiodachboden mit einem Blitz, die neue gold-rote Tapete. Beauty, Trash, Glamour.. alle Bilder unberarbeitet, um einen Eindruck zu vermitteln, dass ich es mag, auch ohne aufwändige Bearbeitung ein Foto zu schaffen, dass die Bezeichnung "Bild" verdient. Danke Alicia !

Viele haben so ihre Vorbehalte, wenn es darum geht, zum Fotografen zu gehen. Das ist oft so gar nicht locker. Nur wenig Zeit, eine ungewohnte Umgebung, ein paar Bilder, kein Spielraum für Fehler, Lachen, Vertrauen gewinnen. Ich nenne das "say cheese" Fotografie.

Mein Ziel ist es, dass sich auch ganz normale Menschen wohl fühlen beim Fotografieren. In einer entspannten Atmosphäre werden Bilder gemacht, die den Menschen zeigen, wie er ist. Von der passenden Seite. Ohne große Nachbearbeitungen am PC, ohne Korrekturen von Figur und Alter.

Letztes Wochenende war wieder so ein gelungener Shootingtag. Nach dem Styling beim Friseur bei uns im Ort ging es ins Studio. Zunächst wurde in unserem weißen Raum fotografiert, ohne Blitze. Das ist gut, wenn das Model noch nicht so geübt ist. So kommt es in das Gefühl hinein, dass es angenehm sein kann, fotografiert zu werden. Danach geht es weiter im Studio, mit Blitzen, Requisiten, so wie abgesprochen oder spontan verändert.

Ein Wiedersehen - aus meiner Anfangszeit der Studiofotografie. Der Kontakt zu Katrin riss nie ganz ab und so war es schon lange geplant, einmal wieder Bilder zusammen zu machen. Nun war es soweit. Es regnete, die Kamera musste bei Bildern am Fenster mit ISO 640 das fehlende Licht ausgleichen. Ziel war, möglichst viel der Bildbearbeitung schon in der Kamera zu machen, etwas getonte s/w Bilder oder entsättigte Farbbilder als Basis von cross-bearbeiteten Ergebnissen. Tapfer konnten wir sogar auf dem ungeheizten Studiodachboden die Boxer-Bilder machen. Und draußen stürmte und regnete es in Strömen... Danke für die Bilder, Katrin.

Winter indoor available light

Ein entspanntes Shooting im Januar mit Melina. Mir gefallen besonders die Bilder, die bei Tageslicht am Fenster entstanden. Es war ein heller Tag - sofern man davon im Januar überhaupt sprechen mag.

Bei ISO 400 lassen sich aber problemlos Bilder bei Blende 1.4 - 2.8 machen. Ich belichte meist +2/3 Blenden dabei und entsättige bereits die JPG in der Kamera. Mit einem großen Sunbounce-Reflektor wird die andere Seite des Gesichtes aufgehellt.

Wie kommt das Logo auf meine Bilder?

Ich wurde gefragt, wie ich mein Logo schnell und einfach auf meine Bilder bekomme. Ganz einfach. Mit einem eigenen Pinsel in Photoshop.

Das Bild oder Objekt (in meinem Fall eine Vektorgrafik), das zum Pinsel in Photoshop werden soll, markieren. Je nach gewünschter Kante entsprechend die Weiche Kante einstellen. Das geht bis 2500x2500 Pixel Größe. Farbbilder werden dabei in Graustufen umgewandelt.

Danach einfach im Menü Bearbeiten -> Pinselvogabe festlegen aufrufen und den Pinsel speichern. Er kann dann in verschiedenen Größen kopiert werden und in Deckkraft, Farbe usw. wie ein normaler Pinsel genutzt werden.
Ein Klick, das Logo sitzt.

Ein langes Projekt wird langsam fertig. Nach meiner Webseite www.CPPHOTO.de und Facebook-Auftritt ist nun heute auch http://blog.cpphoto.de in frischem Design etwas aufgeräumter live gegangen.

Die neuen Vorlagen von Blogger.com sind leicht anzupassen und der Content pflegt sich fast wie von selbst.

Nun kann es losgehen mit Fotos in 2011. Morgen ist das erste Shooting, ich freue mich drauf.

Beachtet bitte auch meine TFP-Shooting Ideen in der rechten Spalte, insbesondere die 70ies Style Shootings als Fotostory mit meinem Renault 4 liegen mir am Herzen und sind sicher nicht alltäglich.

Actually, I am not happy with the developement in open forums that try to bring together model, visagist, stylist, photographer. But is having blacklists the right approach? I think I would rather go for the opposite. Tell others about your good experiences working together. I do have many examples.

Wi-Fi - how to : direct Canon WFT ad hoc WLAN link iPad - no router

Time for a different post. The model I booked did not show up, so I found some time to look at my gadgets.

I installed today the great iPad App ShutterSnitsh. The usage with Eye-Fi SD cards is quite straight forward and I wanted to have a stably running way of pairing the iPad and the Canon EOS 5D mk II with the WFT-E4-II. The Canon WFT transmitters allow many options. Using a router to set up an infrastructure Wi-Fi network is the usual way. This needs extra hardware, and I was looking for an option to use the great features of ShutterSnitch and the display quality also when shooting on location.

There is a feature in the iPad that allows connecting it also to adhoc Wi-Fi networks. Without a jailbreak the iPad will not act as the host of an ad hoc wireless network. If you want this feature by setting the iPad as a Wi-Fi hotspot, you will have to jailbreak it and to install MyWi on it. For those who believe the iPad should remain pure Apple: Look at the steps below, it is working. You only have to start the ad hoc WLAN first and then connect the iPad to it with fixed IP settings. This means the Canon WFT starts the network and the iPad is joining it.

But let's go step by step.

After buying ShutterSnitch in the iTunes Store and running it for the first time, the app will ask you to enter a password and will finalize the setup with a screen like this.
Do not worry about the IP address, we will define a static one later for the iPad when connected to the WLAN.
Important is the Username snitch the port 26000 and the password you entered. You will need to enter it into the EOS settings.

Now turn on the Camera and go the WFT settings. The setup menu will allow you to select the Set of LAN settings you want to use to connect your WFT to the iPad.

By setting TCP/IP to manual, you can now define fixed IP address settings for the WFT. In my case, I used one of the standard private ranges: 192.168.0.2 as IP address for the WFT, subnet and gateway accordingly as on the screenshots.

Then go to the FTP server menu and define a target ftp server address in the same IP address range, in my case 192.168.0.3 - this is the address we will later assign to the iPad. Set the port to 26000 as required by the ShutterSnitch app to act as ftp server. Set the login name to snitch and enter the password you defined when setting up the app on the iPad.

Target folder entry should be empty and proxy disabled.

Next we will define the ad hoc mode for the WLAN. Go to the Wireless LAN menu and select the SSID. Enter a name which suits you, in my case iPad+Canon. I suggest to use the advanced settings as indicated on the screens, Ad hoc 11g for a fast data transmission, select a channel which is not interfering at your location. Depending on your personal paranoia, you might want to use WEP encryption (the only one defined in the ad hoc WLAN standard) and define another password.

The confirm settings screen summarize your entries.

Now leave the menu on your camera and set it in shooting mode. The WFT will now start sending on the defined WLAN as your camera hotspot.

Turn on your iPad, go to settings screen. You will now find the newly setup WFT network. Select it. If you enabled WEP encryption you will have to key in the password you defined in the camera.

The small blue arrow will lead you the next and most important step: defining a static IP address for your iPad.

Now your FTP-Server's IP address has to be defined. In my example 192.168.0.3
All other fields are using the same pattern and settings as above in the WFT settings.

That's it. The settings on my iPad did not work instantly after setup, it helped to loop thru the Airplane mode by turning it off and on and by re-selecting the new network and keying in the WEP password. Do not forget to make sure the WFT is broadcasting. If not, make sure the camera is ready for shooting and the green LED on the WFT is flashing. The iPad will discover the WLAN then.

When you now start the ShutterSnitch App - you find no longer the dynamic IP address it shows when we have started. The static IP is used now. Enjoy the new options of using the iPad when shooting.

A spontaneous shooting just when the heavy rain today stopped fora while and the clouds became the best softbox. Asmall Sunbounce reflector was used to make her face evenly bright. The open 50 mm lens at f1.4 created the great DOF and bokeh. Who says a rainy day cannot make good pictures?

From Swedish Midsummer to Trash

Wow. This was an awesome shooting with Fleurie. It was actually our third session together, this time full of contrasts. Fleurie has such a huge set of posings, gestures, outfits and ideas and this all is being accompanied with a great sense of humor. Starting with the Swedish Mittsommar shoot in the bright studio of the Fotos4Fun Studios, we then moved on location to the soon to be demolished silo in Uetersen.

The shooting needed some improvisation but although being a bit chilly the silo location had a great available light and we decided not use the portable flashes too much.

As always on my blog - all pictures out of camera to give you an impression what the raw data is that I use when editing my pictures. Edited versions can be found on my flickr stream or at my sedcard.

Thanks to all who made this shooting possible, mainly to the municipality of Uetersen and to Blumen Sudek. Our sincere thanks go to you all. And thanks to Fleurie's passion and smiles.

As temperature and weather are still more like winter we had a good shooting last Friday in the heated studio. Getting approached from the model after a year to resume shootings is one of the best compliments a photographer can get. And the "heidilicious" styled socks were one of the hilghlights of this session. All pictures above are out of camera without additional editing. Final versions can be seen at my flickr account.

I always wanted to capture a puffin like this, currently my most interesting picture at Flickr. The first day we drove all the way to Latrabjarg cliff on Iceland was stormy, only a few puffins were there. It was an unforgettably moment when a Humpback whale started jumping together with the child. We could hardly stand in the wind and forgot to take some pictures.
The next day nothing but blue sky, some birds, surfin' seals at the beach. Iceland can be so different within only a few hours. We will never forget these days.

A long planned shooting finally took place and I would say from both sides it was better than expected. Her enthousiasm about the results makes me happy. This is what a TFP shooting should be - Model and photographer benefit from it. I never used digital color crossing before. Her beauty, style and wonderful hair made this a great experience. Even the blue sky matched the color of her eyes. Thanks for the pictures.

This shooting was a short term planned mixture of model coaching and flash test for myself. I am still learning to work with the Hensel equipment. Amazing precision compared to our Bowens flashes in the other studios. And thanks to my model we had a nice portrait session in a relaxed weekend mode. No make-up, photos not edited.

I am still not sure if I prefer the fantastic black and white jpgs from the camera taken with a picture stly with a digital orange filter and a slightly increased contrast. Here is an alternative from a shooting where mainly b/w prints were desired made in post processing the jpgs from the camera.

A great way to combine different outfits within one session. Thanks to my wonderful model. And it was a great occasion of using the Sunbounce on a rainy day indoor (left and right).

After some calm weeks in Iceland I am now crawling through some pictures of the stunning landscapes of this wonderful country. Although the weather was not alwys the best it made some intersting landscape impressions which would be less fascinating with pure blue sky.

Gone Fishing

...and birdwatching. My models from nature are fun to shoot as well. I like the puffins and their funny activities. Sitting on the cliff, high above the ocean, on a small island somewhere in a fjord in Iceland, I could do that again and again. Nature is full of wonders.

Did some shots with a couple that was so cute and relaxed while attending a workshop in Hamburg today. Played with Sunbounce, Flashes, available light, exchanging lenses... got an even longer shopping list now.

As I had to postpone my shooting due to some crazy job related issues I was happy to have my backup model Marie available. As the sun also had the good idea to shine on a Sunday afternoon and we have a recently opened DIY shop nearby I drove a Marie to an outdoor shooting to do some unusual 17 mm shots.

We had fun making some pictures with studio light and available light and although the equipment in the studio was somewhat disgusting today with me we enjoyed taking the pictures. I am always amazed of the quality even at ISO 3200.

5D mk II - I like this piece of technology

Highkeys and lowkeys taken in the same shooting. Only a few amendments in were needed on the base of the JPGs from the camera. When I compare the results I am getting from the 5D mk II, I am quite satisfied with the improvement. Less time, more JPGs that can be used with only a minimum of time needed to correct them. Thanks Chrissie for the pictures.

Slide Show testing

Testing day. I wanted to build a slide show from some shooting material with Nele. The original is with music - but with the guys from Gema looking over one's shoulder I decided not to include some of this licence free background music from supermarkets instead. This one's been compiled with AuqaSoft DiaShow Studio 6. I am not fully convinced yet with the software. Where do I find a really good tool that produces in HDTV and flv format and includes also Movie sections of my 5D?

Thanks for any advice.

Photoshopping Day

An intesive photo session over 9 hours in the studio and in the attic created a backlog of pictures to be delivered. Thanks to the rain today I managed to deliver some of them, see above.

And the good news is: we are now officiall using the attic at the old industry mill where have the Fotos4Fun Studios. And the fourth studio room is already painted. We are looking for new members - wir suchen neue Mitglieder unserer Studiogemeinschaft in 25436 Uetersen. Bei Interesse bitte Email.

Another great shooting in the attic of our studio. We are now officially renting this part of the building as well, what a great combination of professional studio and just next door the flair and dust of a +100 year old building. It offers a great combination of daylight and studio light.

Tested the new Beauty Dish from Sambesigroup - good results, see above. All pictures out of camera.

At the end of a sunny day a spontaneous shooting at the river. We did some nice shots, were accompanied by some curious people. The Sunbounce again did a great job. The Renault R4 of course as well.

Driving to the North Sea.. my EOS 5D Mk never saw the horizon before. Tested the video features of this fantastic camera.. I am just loving this perfect piece of technology. And enjoying the sun and taking some fun shots as well .. perfect day. That is what really matters.

Last Friday I joined the inspiring workshop of Mike Larson in Hamburg. He openly shared his concepts and vision of being a professional photographer. By applying some experiences from successful business on his own business, he achived a well running company. His fucussed way of working in combination with his hints in using Califonia Sunbounce equipment was a really cool experience.
